Bill advances to ban eminent domain by private company

The Missouri House has advanced a bill to prevent eminent domain from being used to take private land for the proposed wind energy project Grain Belt Express.

By a voice vote, the House approved the bill Tuesday, sponsored by Representative Mike Haffner, a western Missouri Christmas tree farmer in Cass County, “Mr. Speaker, this is a private, out-of-state company using eminent domain as a public utility. And there’s very little benefit to the state of Missouri. Only six-percent of the power will be used here.”

The Missouri House will take another vote on the measure where it’s expected to reach the Missouri Senate for a vote.
