Uri aftermath not over

Brownfield’s meteorologist says the damage from Winter Storm Uri is far-reaching across the country from bitterly cold temperatures to the aftermath of record snowfall.

“It reaches from the Canadian Prairie all the way to absolute devastation on the livestock side and all the way down to the Gulf Coast.”

Greg Soulje says the snow and ice left behind will also cause issues in the weeks ahead.

“There is damage in citrus, there is damage in winter wheat fields and if it’s not that, I think here in the next couple of weeks it will certainly be the rapid snowmelt that gets underway and is underway over parts of the Midwest—ice jamming effects I’m sure,” he says.

He says winter wheat and pasture damage could range from Montana and the Dakotas through Texas as a lack of snow cover and frigid temperatures brought widespread damage to crops.  For the Central and Southern Plains in the middle, Soulje says drought conditions remain and will also make for a difficult start to spring.
