Iowa legislators off to a fast start
The chair of the Agriculture Committee in the Iowa House says lawmakers have been very busy during the first month of the 2021 Session.
Representative Ross Paustian, a Republican from Walcott, tells Brownfield his chamber moved 25 bills on Wednesday.
“It seems like this is the most bills this early in the session that I’ve seen being pushed on the Floor.”
He’s encouraged by the progress and believes the pandemic is probably behind it.
“We don’t want another shutdown like last year, we’d just as soon get our work done. So I think that’s part of the push. There was a lot of stuff that died last year because of COVID.”
The House Ag Committee has already filed bills on driving privileges for minors who work or live on a farm, storage infrastructure funding to support higher ethanol blends, and a beginning farmer tax credit.
Paustian says they’ve also thrown out some legislation that he deemed as anti-agriculture.
