Ethanol leader: “Stop handing SRE’s out like candy on Halloween”

An ethanol expert is watching the new EPA leaders closely this year to see how they handle small refinery exemptions under the renewable fuels standard.

John Caupert is the Executive Director of the National Corn to Ethanol Research Center located on the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Campus.

“At points in time during the last two administrations it felt like these small refinery exemption waivers were being handed out like candy to children on Halloween.”

He tells Brownfield impact from the waivers has trickled down to everyone involved in the ethanol industry.

“This not only cost the ethanol industry billions of gallons of lost ethanol production, it also cost the corn farmers. It cost our corn farmers here in Illinois. Billions across the nation in lost corn sales.”

Caupert says he is interested to see if the Biden administration will bring a stop to the waivers that have been handed out for far too long.
