NE bill looks to patch hole in animal prescription law

The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association has outlined its 2021 legislative priorities placing an emphasis on Legislative Bill 252.

Nebraska Cattlemen’s President Bill Ray tells Brownfield LB 252 would allow producers to continue to receive prescriptions for 30 days following the death of their veterinarian, otherwise…

“It becomes an animal welfare issue in that you can’t get the products you need to take care of animal health until you set up a new relationship with the prescribing veterinarian,” Ray said.

He said the ‘Dr. Fox Bill’, named after late Nebraska Cattlemen’s board member Dr. Jeff Fox, addresses a hole in Nebraska law that Fox’s clients ran into after he died last year.

“The minute he passed, all of their prescriptions for livestock products were null and void,” he said.

Ray said the provided 30-day period would provide time for producers to find a new veterinarian.
