Iowa’s Ag Secretary calls this an “interesting time in agriculture.”
Mike Naig tells Brownfield he sees plenty of optimism right now.
“Markets are better and improving, and there’s always optimism about a new year. And then, there’s some uncertainty. As we have a new administration taking shape in Washington, what are those priorities and how do those things impact farmers and agribusinesses?”
He says there’s also some caution as farmers think about tax and climate policy under President Biden.
“And you know, farmer profitability is still critically important. Whether we’re talking about the need to open markets or protect the RFS, ensure that we don’t have regulatory overreach by government. Or whether you’re talking about taxes, and estate taxes in particular. Those are all things that hit the bottom line.”
Naig says Biden ran on the concept of raising taxes, so farmers should anticipate that.
On climate, he says agriculture has a tremendous opportunity and needs to be at the table as policies take shape.
