Drought a common topic on day 1 of Iowa Ag Expo

There’s a lot of talk about drought as farmers gather at a farm show in central Iowa this week.

Brownfield interviewed Stine Seed Company regional agronomist Dustin Ellis Tuesday at the Iowa Ag Expo in Des Moines.

Ellis says he’s had quite a few conversations about drought during the first day of the Expo.

“There’s very little tile running (but) the thing about it is we can make up real quick in the spring. Hopefully we do it in March and not around April 20th. But guys are talking about (drought), it is a concern.”

He tells Brownfield even if it remains dry, plant breeding technology has proven to withstand harsh environments.

“And that’s one thing companies (like ours) are doing is trying to get products that can withstand these different events like wind, farmers want standability. But you also want crops that can tolerate drought and everything, because Mother Nature at the end of the day is what controls everything.”
