More than $4 million food dollars pledged in education purchases

The Michigan Department of Education has awarded $2 million to nearly 140 grant winners for its 10 Cents a Meal for Michigan’s Kids and Farms program for the current school year.

The program awards schools with matching incentive funding up to 10 cents per meal to purchase and serve Michigan-grown fruits, vegetables, and legumes.  Many schools participating also invite local farmer suppliers in for demonstrations and hands-on learning experiences to help students learn how their food was produced.

The state legislature more than tripled funding in the pilot program for the 2021 state budget and extended its reach statewide as well as added early childhood center participation.
