Steenhoek: Consider the Missouri River for shipping ag goods

Mike Steenhoek with the Soy Transportation Coalition says there’s a mode of soybean and grain shipment that should be getting more attention.

“It’s beneficial when farmers and other agriculture shippers can access more than one mode of transportation,” Steenhoek told Brownfield Ag News, “and we think the Missouri River could be an option for that.”

There’s more potential for the Missouri River as a shipping lane than peoples’ perceptions would indicate, according to Steenhoek.

“There is a favorable story to tell,” said Steenhoek, “and we as the Soy Transportation Coalition, one of our priorities this upcoming year is to help amplify that message more and to really help shine more of a light on the Missouri River and its potential.”

Making use of the Missouri River for shipping, said Steenhoek, could improve transportation access for farmers from Missouri upstream to South Dakota.
