China approves GMO corn to be imported

China has approved two GMO corn strains to be imported for the next five years.

China’s agriculture ministry says the GMO corn strains from Syngenta and Bayer CropScience are resistant to insects and herbicide tolerant.

China’s state-run news agency says the ministry is also set to pass biosafety evaluations for two Chinese developed GMO corn species and a soybean. GMO crops must pass biosafety evaluations to be approved for commercial use.

Currently, only some GMO corn and papaya are approved for commercial planting in China.
