Biofuels, which are critical for soy growers, have role to play in climate challenge

American Soybean Association CEO Steve Censky says ensuring there is proper implementation of the Renewable Fuel Standard, including increasing volumes for biodiesel and advanced biofuels, is critical for soybean growers.

One third of all soybean oil produced in the U.S. goes into the biodiesel market.

“And what we’ve seen is the market potential unfortunately has been undermined some in recent years by small refinery exemptions granted by EPA as well as what we think is not aggressive enough targets set by EPA for growing the volumes,” he says.

He says he is hopeful that will improve because biofuels have a role to play in addressing climate challenges, a top priority of the incoming administration.

“When the Biden Administration is looking for a clean-burning fuel that is good for the environment and good for reducing greenhouse gases and good for the climate, we think we have a ready-made solution right here and that’s the message we’re sending,” he says.

Censky says biodiesel has an 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions when compared to petroleum diesel.
