Cotton production down, rice up in 2020
U.S. cotton production dipped in 2020, while rice production moved higher.
The USDA says the 2020 upland cotton crop was 14.401 bales, down 4.826 million on the year because of a decrease in planted area due to concerns about manufacturing demand caused COVID-19. Planted area declined by more than 1.5 million acres and harvested area fell almost 3 million on weather issues in the Delta, while the average yield of 825 pounds per acre was up 2.
The USDA lowered U.S. cotton ending stocks on that smaller crop and expectations for better export demand, which helped draw down the world supply guess. The average 2020/21 farm price is estimated at $.68 per pound, compared to $.65 in December and $.596 for 2019/20.
All rice production was 227.583 million hundredweight, 42.5 million more than the previous year with planted area rising by more than a half million acres on domestic demand expectations and the average yield jumping 146 pounds to 7,619 pounds per acre. Most of that was long grain rice at 170.853 million hundredweight.
U.S. rough rice ending stocks were down on the month with the USDA expecting lower imports and lower exports but raising the domestic demand guess, while global milled rice supplies were up modestly. The average 2020/21 farm price is estimated at $13.20 per hundredweight, compared to $13.10 in December and $13.50 for 2019/20.
The 2020/21 marketing year for cotton and rice started August 1st, 2020 and the USDA’s next set of supply and demand estimates is out February 9th.
