Tackling climate change under the new administration

Climate change is expected to be one of the priorities for the incoming Biden Administration and state department of ag officials say they’re prepared.

Dr. Charles Hatcher is the Tennessee Commissioner of Ag.  “As foresters grow trees and farmers grow green, living plants, those plants are pulling carbon out of the atmosphere and putting that in the soil,” he says.  “And that’s a good thing.  We welcome those efforts.”

Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward says they are in a good position to handle any new legislation or mandates that may arise.  “Our Natural Resources Commission and that personnel and programs now falling under the department of agriculture will make it a lot easier for us to work together on anything that may come up and be changed as a new administration comes in,” he says.

Last month President-elect Joe Biden said farmers could make US agriculture the first in the world to achieve net-zero emissions and gain new sources of income in the process.
