Cherry Checkoff proposes reallocation of funds in down crop year

The USDA is accepting comments on a proposed rule brought forth by the industry which would change the assessment funds of tart cherries.

The Cherry Industry Administrative Broad’s recommendation would redistribute assessment dollars from research and promotion activities to administrative expenses.  The rate growers are assessed is unchanged at $0.00575 per pound of cherries.

Tart cherry production was down more than 40 percent during 2020 and the Board says the change would ensure adequate administrative funds despite a significant draw-down in reserves.

Written comments will be accepted until January 15th.
