Total number of hogs and pigs declines again

The USDA’s latest hogs and pigs report signals some contraction in the US hog herd.

The total number of hogs and pigs in the US is 77.5 million, that’s down 1 percent from a year ago and down 1 percent from September 1.   Market hog inventory declined 1 percent from last quarter and last year.  Breeding inventory was down 3 percent from last year and down 1 percent from the previous quarter.

The September through November 2020 pig crop and the sows farrowed are both down 1 percent from 2019.

Looking ahead, US hog producers are projected to increase farrowings for the December 2020 to February 2021 time period, that’s a 2 percent increase from actual year-ago farrowings.  Intended farrowings for March-May are down 1 percent from the same period one-year earlier.

The total number of contract hogs on operations larger than 5,000 head, accounts for 48 percent of the total US hog inventory, unchanged from the previous year.
