Red meat production declines in November

Total red meat production for November dropped from the previous month and was down 1 percent from last year.  The USDA says red meat production totaled 4.68 billion pounds for November.

Beef production declined 1 percent on the year at 2.26 billion pounds.  Cattle slaughter dropped 3 percent from November 2019, but live weights did increase 13 pounds. Commercial pork production totaled 2.41 billion pounds, down 1 percent from the previous year.  Total hog slaughter declined 3 percent from last year at 11.0 million head and the average live weight jumped 6 pounds from year-ago levels.

The USDA says the dairy cow slaughter for November was just over 229,000 head, down about 30,000 from October and down about 27,000 from November 2019.  For the year to date, the dairy cow slaughter is 2.79 million head.

Year-to-date commercial red meat production is at 50.8 pounds, still 1 percent above 2019’s record-pace.
