Unseasonably mild pattern to return to the Heartland

A developing storm system currently crossing the Plains will reach the middle Atlantic Coast late Wednesday.

For the remainder of Tuesday, some of the most significant accumulations of snow will occur in northwestern Oklahoma and portions of neighboring states.

At mid-week, wintry precipitation (snow and sleet) may cause major travel disruptions from the central Appalachians and middle Atlantic States into southern New England. Snow will linger into Thursday across coastal New England. In the storm’s wake, tranquil weather will prevail nationwide, except for periods of rain and snow from the Pacific Northwest to the northern Rockies.

On December 16-17, precipitation will briefly spread as far south as northern and central California. In contrast, dry weather will prevail during the next 5 days across southern California and much of the Southwest, as well as the northern Plains and upper Midwest.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for warmer-than-normal weather nationwide, except for near-normal temperatures in the southern Atlantic region.

Meanwhile, wetter-than-normal conditions in much of the northern and eastern U.S. should contrast with near- or below-normal precipitation across the nation’s southwestern quadrant and from the central and southern Plains into the western Corn Belt.
