USDA says this week will determine DMC extension

The head of the USDA Farm Service Agency says it is unlikely the Dairy Margin Coverage Program enrollment deadline will be extended past December 11th.

As of Monday, nearly 45 percent of producers had signed up for the program which is forecasted to provide margin protection for a majority of next year.

Administrator Richard Fordyce says enrollments have been picking up in recent weeks and this week will determine if there is a need to give farmers more time, but…

“At this point, I would say there is not going to be an extension, that’s why I think it’s imperative to go ahead and get folks in the door.”

The National Milk Producers Federation is calling for the agency to extend the deadline until the end of January to help give farmers and USDA staff more time as the pandemic has challenged the typical process.

USDA says as of December 7th, Wisconsin had the most farms enrolled followed by Pennsylvania, New York, Minnesota, Ohio, Michigan, California, Iowa, Indiana, and Missouri.
