USDA is projecting more wheat acres in 2021

USDA is projecting that wheat acres will increase to 46 million acres in 2021.

National Association of Wheat Growers President Dave Milligan says this is good news for growers after years of declines in wheat acres.

“It’s a financial thing. If you’re a wheat grower and you grow other crops, you grow the crops that provide you the best return and wheat hasn’t always been where it should be compared to some of the other major crops.”

He tells Brownfield NAWG is hopeful wheat is becoming more competitive.

“We look forward to hopefully making some improvements in that in the next farm bill,” he says. “It certainly is a good thing for wheat growers to see a little light at the end of the tunnel.”

The USDA projection is 1.6 million acres more than the 44.3 million wheat acres planted this year.
