Skim milk powder production leads for October

The USDA says October dairy product numbers were mostly stable compared to last year with the largest gains continuing for skim milk powder.

Total cheese production totaled 1.1 billion pounds, fractionally lower on the year but up three percent from the previous month. Italian cheese production was up on the month and down on the year while American cheese was higher on the year and from September.

Butter production totaled 165 million pounds, up a percent from last year and nearly nine percent from the previous month.

Nonfat dry milk was up 4 percent from 2019 and skim milk powder was up more than 20 percent.  Dry whey production was down nearly 12 percent.  Lactose was down less than one percent from last year.
