ISDA awards $4-million in grants to local meat processors
Indiana recently announced it has awarded $4-million in grants to aid 41 small local meat-processing businesses to offset the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
The funds, made available through federal CARES Act dollars, can be used to improve food supply resiliency – and could be used to promote worker safety, expand processing capacity, or increase slaughter capacity.
Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch, Indiana’s Secretary of Agriculture, says the grants will help address issues caused by the coronavirus pandemic and help processors meet consumer demands. The grants come with a 50 percent cash match requirement, meaning at least $8 million will be invested in the Indiana small meat processing economy.
ISDA director Bruce Kettler says meat processors contribute nearly $4-billion to the state’s economy and it’s vital to keep these businesses growing and operating safely.
ISDA received 60 applications with a total of $6.8-milllion in funding requests.
