Farm Credit announces internship program for HBCU students

The Farm Credit Council has announced an internship program to encourage students and recent graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to join the Farm Credit system.

Todd Van Hoose is president and CEO of the Farm Credit Council.   “We’ve had a hard time attractive and retaining minority candidates in the Farm Credit System,” he says.  “This partnership with the HBCUs gives us the opportunity to expose Farm Credit to students and hopefully get them interested in the mission we’re trying to fulfill.”

He tells Brownfield the Launching Leaders program will award a $3,500 stipend to help remove the cost of an internship as a barrier to interested students.  “Most likely students aren’t living close to a Farm Credit institution,” he says.  “As a result of that, this stipend will allow them to basically be economically comfortable taking that internship.”

Farm Credit is also hosting a job fair specifically to recruit HBCU students for internships and career opportunities.  “We’re partnering with the HBCUs and there are around 30 Farm Credit institutions that have signed up,” he says.  “We’re have all these kids invited and we’re going to have around 70 Farm Credit system individuals ready to talk to these kids as they come in through the virtual door.”

The job fair is Thursday, October 29 from 2 to 4pm ET.  Interested HBCU students and alumni may register HERE.

The Launching Leaders Stipend is part of the organization’s commitment to the HBCU Partnership Challenge, a public pledge through which organizations commit to creating or deepening relationships with HBCUs with a goal of recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce from these institutions.
