Pacific Ethanol continues transition from ethanol to specialty alcohols

California-based Pacific Ethanol says it is realigning its business and changing its name to reflect its new focus on specialty alcohols used in sanitizers and alcoholic beverages.

The company says it will still produce some ethanol, but transportation fuels will no longer be its primary focus.

Pacific’s transition is already underway. It is now producing 50 percent ethanol and 50 percent specialty alcohols, compared to an 85/15 production mix in 2019.

As part of the realignment, the company says it will sell or repurpose its three idled ethanol plants on the West Coast. In addition to its western U.S. facilities, Pacific owns the ethanol plant at Pekin, Illinois.

Pacific did not announce what its new name will be.
