Perdue discusses next steps for USDA under second term
U.S. Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue tells Brownfield farmers can expect to see an added emphasis on broadband from the Trump Administration if reelected.
“I think COVID-19 has shown us from remote learning as well as a telehealth perspective rural America needs that. I think President Trump’s committed to building out this connectivity.”
He says precision agriculture technology can enhance productivity while helping the environment and allow farmers to take part in e-commerce, but they need broadband to fuel innovations.
He points to USDA’s Ag Innovation Agenda as an area to tackle climate change and sequester carbon under a second term.
“Yes, this will be part of a new administration that really deals with carbon capture and farmers getting credit for what I believe they’ve been doing.”
The goal of USDA’s Innovation agenda is to increase production by 40 percent while cutting the environmental footprint of U.S. ag in half by 2050.
Perdue was in Michigan Friday to tour ZFS Ithaca and hold a Townhall at Michigan Farm Bureau President Carl Bednarski’s farm in the Thumb on issues impacting agriculture and rural communities.
