CARES Act dollars made available to help Minnesota farmers

More than $7 million in financial support is being made available to Minnesota farmers through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security, or CARES Act.

Governor Walz calls the work farmers have done to keep Minnesotans and the nation fed during the pandemic remarkable, and says he’s proud to allocate this much-needed support.

The funding includes $1 million for cost share to aid companies or individuals looking to expand or open a meat processing facility, $500,000 for local food systems, $250,000 for Farm Business Management scholarships, and $5.75 million in direct payments for pork and turkey producers to compensate for market disruptions caused by COVID-19.

Walz is touring farms in southern Minnesota today as part of the announcement.
