Award-winning Wisconsin cheese plant will shut down
A Wisconsin cheesemaker with more than 100 cheesemaking awards will close one of its plants in November. Maple Leaf Cheesemakers announced their decision to close the Monroe, Wisconsin plant saying the dairy market volatility and the coronavirus pandemic led to the decision to close.
Maple Leaf Cheesemakers has an agreement to purchase milk from 25 local dairy farm families that formed the Maple Leaf Cheese Cooperative. The cheesemakers issued a 60-day closure notice under that agreement to allow the farmers to try and find another home for their milk.
Maple Leaf Cheesemakers says they will offer the 35 affected employees positions in other facilities including Alpine Slicing and Cheese Conversion Company and Cheese Louise, also located in Monroe.
Maple Leaf Cheesemakers creates several varieties including Monterey Jack, smoked gouda, pepper jack, Fontina, and their English Hollow Cheddar, which was recently named one of the top 20 cheeses in the world.
