Regenerative ag can play a role in combatting climate challenges

Regenerative agriculture practices can be used to combat the climate crisis according to a new white paper by the Rodale Institute.  

Yichao Rui, soil scientist at the institute and co-author of the paper, says regenerative systems can improve the environment and farm profitability.

“By shifting both crop and pasture management globally to regenerative systems, we can drawdown carbon dioxide emissions and also we found that the crop yields in regenerative systems can outcompete conventional yields,” he says.

He says it’s critical to address these climate challenges.

“In 2020, we saw an increasing amount of extreme weather and it has come to a time that we need to take action,” he says.

The new white paper builds on research published by the Rodale Institute in 2014. 

Rui says they wanted to update the latest science and provide actionable steps for eaters, farmers, and policymakers to take to increase adoption of regenerative food and farming systems to mitigate climate crisis.
