McKinney pleased with recent China purchases

USDA Undersecretary Ted McKinney says he’s pleased with the recent purchases of US ag goods by China.

“Occasionally we’re seeing record purchases on a daily basis but it’s really rocking and rolling, and we hope that is sustained all the way through,” he says.

He says China has time to meet its commitments in the coming year because the phase one deal is a two-year agreement.

“We’re not ready to suggest that they will or won’t meet that, we’re just remaining optimistic that the trendline looks good at this point and I’m thrilled that the market and market prices for the most part reflect that,” he says.

But, McKinney says he would like to see China purchase more ethanol and specialty crops like fruits, vegetables, and tobacco.

McKinney made these comments during an Indiana Farm Bureau virtual roundtable with farmers and ag leaders on Wednesday.
