Corteva on Iowa’s double whammy
The double whammy of dry weather and derecho is showing up during Iowa’s harvest.
Ryan Van Roekel, a Pioneer field agronomist in south central Iowa (Johnston) says dry weather has had an impact on soybeans.
“This is a three-bean pod but there’s only two beans inside of this. The plant did commit to this pod but it wasn’t able to fill all three beans in this pod. So that was a widespread thing that I saw in a lot of the dry areas.”
Although there’s concern, he says yield reports are better than expected. As for corn, he says the biggest challenge will be for Iowa farmers affected by the derecho.
“It’s unreal. Mind blowing to me how there can be that widespread of an issue. And so just the scale of it, I think, is going to be the biggest challenge for 2020. Just to get through this year.”
Van Roekel was a presenter on the Corteva media event this week.
