Above-average yields reported in central Nebraska

A central Nebraska farmer says he’s looking at above-average yields on his corn and soybeans this fall.

Dave Merrell of Saint Edward, who has both irrigated and non-irrigated ground, says soybean yields have been very good.

“I’ve seen a lot of mid-70’s for irrigated yields—and dryland yields have been around 55 to 60,” Merrell says.

And he says the yield prospects on corn are also positive.

“I pulled into a corn field and did just a little bit of some high moisture corn. It was dryland and it still was making over 200 bushels. So that’s pretty good for me, anyhow.

Merrell thinks irrigated corn could run in the 230- to 250-bushel range.

Merrell says they plan to wrap up soybean harvest today (Thursday) but may have to wait a while for further drydown in corn.

Merrell serves on the Nebraska Corn Board.
