Corn harvest has late start in southeast Missouri
Corn harvest is getting a later start than usual in southeast Missouri.
Nick Leopold, who farms a couple of miles north of the Arkansas border, just got the combine rolling, but climbed down from the cab for a few minutes to say he is pleased with the way his corn has dried down.
“I think the moisture’s probably around 13.5 to 14 percent,” Leopold told Brownfield Ag News. “It looks pretty good so far, which we’re just starting now.”
After the first round in a new corn field near the southeast Missouri town of Naylor, Leopold guessed the yield to be pushing 230 to 240 bushels to the acre.
“Kernel size looks really good and we’ve had really good test weight this year,” said Leopold, “so I’m hopeful we’ll keep up with it and finish with a timely harvest and a dry harvest. That’s what we’re hoping for.”
The later start to harvest is because corn took longer to dry down this season.
