Perdue discusses ad hoc payments

U.S. Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says farmers want to get back to a good crop at a fair price.

During a webinar hosted by Minnesota Farm Bureau last week, Perdue was asked about ad hoc payments stemming from trade disruptions and the coronavirus pandemic.

“When President Trump went after China as an unfair player over a number of years, he knew there would be some pain. That’s why he authorized (USDA) to come up with a program to help. But I want us to get back to farming. I want us to get that check through across the scales rather than the mailbox.”

He says most farmers want that too, and Perdue hopes it will happen soon.

“We’re seeing some numbers out of our economic chief economist now that says our farm income will be back over that 40-year average. That’s good news.”

Perdue says it’s good to see soybean prices back in the double digits, and he’s bullish on corn and wheat prices as well.
