Economist says china needs “Herculean lift” to meet phase one goals

The Chief Economist for the American Farm Bureau Federation says the phase one trade deal with China is moving in slow motion.

John Newton says sales of US ag goods to China are up about 7% from 2019, but…

“We need to ship about $4.5 billion each month from August to December to meet that phase one target. That would total about $23 billion over the next 5 months. We have never done that in the past, so it is going to need to be a pretty big lift.”

Newton’s data shows aside from 2019, total exports to China from January to July 2020 were the lowest since 2010.

Newton was a virtual speaker at the AgriPulse ag outlook forum in Kansas City.
