Michigan harvests picking up

Warm and dry fall weather pushed crops toward maturity last week in Michigan.

The USDA says 61 percent of corn is dented, 55 percent is mature, and condition dropped a point to 55 percent good to excellent.  Soybeans are 89 percent dropping leaves, 49 percent mature, and 13 percent harvested with condition dropping two points to 60 percent good to excellent.

As of Sunday, 52 percent of dry beans and 58 percent of sugarbeets were in good to excellent condition.  Corn silage is 88 percent harvested, dry beans are 37 percent, and sugarbeets are 31 percent finished.

Harvest continues for apples with very strong demand reported and many growers reporting record sales for this time of year at farmers’ markets and U-Picks.
