South Dakota crops ahead of average as harvest begins

South Dakota crops are progressing well ahead of average as harvest begins for corn and soybeans.

The USDA reports as of Sunday 88% of corn was dented compared to 74% on average and 47% of the crop is mature, well ahead of the 21% average. South Dakota corn is rated 68% good to excellent.

Soybeans are rated 64% good to excellent with 61% dropping leaves, 20 points ahead of average.

One percent of both corn and soybeans were harvested last week.

Sorghum coloring reached 93%, compared to 75% on average. Thirty-two percent of the crop has reached maturity with an overall rating of 61% good to excellent.

Winter wheat planting reached 8% while pasture and rangeland conditions improved slightly at 30% good to excellent.
