RFA welcomes official denial of gap year waiver petitions

The CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association says they welcome Monday’s announcement by the EPA that it is denying 54 “gap year” small refinery exemptions, “We were sort of pleasantly surprised by this announcement. We believe that this is absolutely the right thing to do and we’ve been asking EPA and the administration to reject these gap year waiver petitions for several months now.”

Geoff Cooper tells Brownfield there are 14 more gap year petitions that it believes the EPA will also deny.

The Renewable Fuels Association led the litigation against the EPA in the Tenth Circuit Court which Cooper says should have led to the swift rejection of the gap year petitions, “We were under the impression that EPA would respect that court decision, that it would take immediate steps to implement that court decision and that didn’t happen. It’s taken eight or nine months until we got some resolution on this issue.”

Cooper says RFA appreciates President Trump for stepping in “to prevent the oil industry from running roughshod over the RFS” making sure that blending requirements are not further eroded.
