Corn silage harvest more than halfway

Rain continued again across Michigan with cooler temperatures last week.  The U.S. Drought Monitor dropped abnormally dry condition ratings by two points to 18 percent.

The USDA says 99 percent of corn is in the dough stage, 78 percent is dented, 19 percent is mature, and condition dropped two three points to 51 percent good to excellent.  Soybeans are 36 percent dropping leaves, and condition improved a point to 62 percent good to excellent.

As of Sunday, 40 percent of dry beans and 53 percent of sugarbeets were in good to excellent condition.  Barley is now 88 percent harvested, while corn silage is at 52 percent, and sugarbeets are 18 percent finished.

Rains have helped fruit sizing and quality.  Harvest continues for apples and a flurry of fall vegetables.
