Fall can be ideal time to treat pastures for weeds

The University of Missouri’s lead weed scientist says now can be the ideal time to apply herbicides to pastures.

Dr. Kevin Bradley says late summer and early fall is the peak of pasture weeds in Missouri, “We tend to have some annual grasses that invade later in the season. We often have some of our broadleaf weed species that just tend to come on later in the season. Then, of course, we always have perennials but some just tend to be a little bit later emerging.”

Bradley says there a lot of pasture herbicides on the market and several new ones but it’s important to identify specific weeds to know what is best to apply.

He says MU research several years ago found better control of blackberry and dewberry in the fall when compared to the spring.

Bradley made his comments on the MU Extension Forage Town Hall this week.
