Little apparent damage from South Dakota frost

There were some freezing temperatures in parts of South Dakota Tuesday night, but little evidence of damage. Becky Harstad farms in the northeastern corner of the state, near Wilmot, South Dakota. She had no apparent damage.

“Nothing serious, nothing too damaging,” Harstad told Brownfield Ag News Wednesday. “A few guys mentioned that they saw a little bit of frost their direction too in the Milbank Wilmot area, but again, nothing that seems like it’s going to really make for a pull-back on the entirety of the crop.”

A bigger problem for the Harstad’s crop has been recent hot, dry weather.

“We were maybe looking at one of our better soybean crops that we’ve seen,” said Harstad, “and now I’d say that’s pulling back maybe 5 to 10 bushel to the acre.”

That hot dry spell was harder on the Harstad’s soybeans than it was on the corn.

“Corn’s still looking pretty strong,” she said, “a little bit of tip-back on some drier spots, but overall I’d say corn’s hanging in there pretty good.”
