Weekend storms damage crops in southern Minnesota

Storms moving across southern Minnesota battered corn and soybeans with hail, high winds, and heavy rain over the holiday weekend.

Brennen Toquam farms near Blooming Prairie in southeastern Minnesota and tells Brownfield some of his crops were damaged by hail early Saturday.

“I was up there yesterday and had some beans on the ground, which is not ideal. And some corn that kind of looks like it got put through a paper shredder or something, leaves are pretty shredded on it.”

He’s also concerned about the cooler and wetter weather pattern this week.

“The calendar turns to September, you don’t get as much heat (and) the days start getting shorter. So when you start to get rains like this, you don’t dry out (as fast) and it’s kind of too late for it to do much benefit for the crops.”

Toquam says he has circled September 20th as the date to begin harvesting soybeans if conditions allow.
