Over 50,000 pounds of pork goes to St. Louis food bank
The Missouri Pork Association and Missouri Farmers Care has teamed up to get pork to food banks.
The St. Louis Area Foodbank received more than 52 thousand pounds of pork last week as part of Missouri Farmers Care’s Drive to Feed Kids program.
Executive Director of Missouri Farmers Care Ashley McCarty tells Brownfield the need for food and especially protein has spiked during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
“The food bank has seen over a 30 percent increase,” she said. “Folks that have never had to rely on a foodbank before have seen unprecedented situations as we all have.”
McCarty says Drive to Feed Kids provided nearly 2 million meals last year and sees room for growth.
Don Nikodim, the executive vice president of the Missouri Pork Association, says the program has received support from hog farmers and it’s no surprise.
“It’s a classic example with producers stepping up in a time of need for a lot of folks that can’t put protein on their table and we’re helping them do just that,” he said.
The St. Louis Area Foodbank serves 13 Missouri counties and 12 counties in Illinois.
McCarty, Nikodim and other ag leaders toured the foodbank Thursday with Brownfield as the presenting sponsor of The Drive to Feed Kids.
