Silage harvest underway in Michigan

A mid-Michigan dairy farmer says corn silage harvest this year has been full of stop-and-gos – partly because of this week’s rain.

Emily Simon and her husband Brent farm in Westphalia.  Emily tells Brownfield her husband’s been in the chopper since Monday.

“They got in the field for about 10 minutes and the kernel processor broke.  They fixed the part; we were able to work for a few days and then the rain came.  And it rained this morning, but we’re back in the fields now and hoping for a good next few days.”

Simon expects corn silage harvest to wrap up in about a week with good yields and another cutting of hay before the end of the year because of ideal growing conditions.
