Corn 74%, soybeans 72% good to excellent in South Dakota

South Dakota crops rounded out August with desirable good to excellent ratings from the USDA.

As of Sunday, South Dakota corn is rated 74% good to excellent. 95% of the crop is in the dough stage, well ahead of 70% last year and the five-year average of 86%. Half of the crop is dented, up 35 percentage points from 2019. Eight percent of South Dakota corn has reached maturity.

Soybeans are rated 72% good to excellent with 96% setting pods and 20% dropping leaves- both ahead of average.

Sorghum is rated 66% good to excellent with 97% of the crop headed, 50% coloring and 4% mature.

Spring wheat harvest is nearing completion with 96% harvested – ahead of last year and average.

Pasture and range land is just 27% good to excellent as the majority of the state is categorized as abnormally dry or in moderate drought by the United States Drought Monitor.
