Sutter says Laura skipped New Orleans ports

Hurricane Laura has now weakened to a tropical depression and U.S. soy leaders say there is a lot of hurricane damage but not to Lower Mississippi River ports.  Jim Sutter is CEO of the U.S. Soybean Export Council.

“The devastation we’ve seen in some pictures is not happening in New Orleans and, fortunately, it’s not going to knock our export facilities out of commission.”

Eric Wenberg, executive director of the Specialty Soya and Grains Alliance, based in Minnesota, says their thoughts are with the victims of the hurricane and ALSO the derecho that ripped across Iowa, “Hundreds of thousands of affected acres and farmers who are having to rebuild. That’s also who we’re thinking about.”

Wenberg says the extreme weather conditions can stop any time now, “We’ve had our host of weather events for the last couple of weeks and that’s enough.” Sutter and Wenberg spoke with reporters Thursday following the USSEC Global Trade Exchange.
