MN Pork CEO describes Chinese export activity as “tale of two cities”

China continues to ramp up purchases of U.S. ag commodities as the country attempts to fulfill its phase one trade commitments.

For pork, Minnesota Pork CEO David Preisler describes the situation as a tale of two cities.

“They’re really our largest pork export customer right now. But on the other hand, will they get to the point of hitting phase one? Most likely not.”

Despite reports from both U.S. and Chinese trade officials that Phase One remains on track, he tells Brownfield the strained relationship might be too much to overcome.

“Unfortunately, they are looking at the United States as kind of a last supplier. They do need pork, but they’re going to other suppliers first, then coming to the United States.”

Preisler says China’s 25 percent tariff on U.S. pork imports is still an obstacle, and he questions whether the Chinese market can be counted on long-term.
