The USDA’s new Office of Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production has announced the first recipients of $4.1 million in grants and cooperative agreements.

Grants have been awarded for 10 planning and implementation projects including community gardens, nonprofit farms, business plan and zone development and increasing food production access in economically distressed communities.

Nearly $1.1 million is going towards 13 community compost and food waste reduction projects. These projects highlight plans to make compost easily accessible to farmers and integrate other food waste strategies.

Undersecretary Greg Ibach says there were nearly 600 applicants that outlined the scope and creativity of urban agriculture projects and USDA is excited to support them.
