NBB launches campaign urging administration to reject gap year requests

The National Biodiesel Board is launching a campaign urging President Trump to reject gap small refinery exemption requests and uphold his commitment to the Renewable Fuel Standard.

Kurt Kovarik, vice president of federal affairs, says the ads will urge farmers and biodiesel producers to contact officials in support of the industry.

“Just 30 seconds at our website would allow individuals to send an email to both President Trump and EPA Administrator Wheeler voicing their concern about what EPA is up to with respect to the Renewable Fuel Standard and providing these loopholes to small refiners to skirt their obligation,” he says.

The radio ads will run for two weeks in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Kansas.

He tells Brownfield action should be taken to reject the retroactive requests soon.

“NBB would like to see nothing short of rejecting these 67 gap year small refinery exemptions as quickly as possible, but certainly before the election in November,” he says.

Kovarik says in three years the EPA has granted 85 small refinery exemptions that destroyed demand for more than a half-billion gallons of biodiesel and hundreds of millions of bushels of soybeans. EPA is now considering nearly 100 new exemption petitions as producers have seen further demand destruction because of coronavirus-related travel restrictions.

Kovarik says the campaign is to urge the administration to address these challenges. Visit NBB’s Fueling Action Center here to find out more.
