Illinois elevator prepared to handle big harvest

A grain elevator in north central Illinois is preparing for large corn and soybean crops this harvest.

Mark Heil is the general manger of Prairie Central Cooperative in McLean and Livingston counties. He tells Brownfield he is confident they can handle it.

“Overall, I think the commercial grain space is ready for a big harvest. We have shipped a lot of grain out this year and we are in a position to handle a good-sized crop.”

At this point Heil does not anticipate the high drying demand they saw in 2019, but that depends on what farmers decide to do with wind damaged crops.

“Does that accelerate the farmer to make a decision to go harvest that corn field maybe  a little bit early just with the concern of what that corn will look like in two, three or four weeks after their done with soybeans?”

Heil says while they got through the derecho wind event, a storm earlier in the summer took out two new grain bins that were being built. They hope to have one of those ready in time for harvest in a few weeks.
