Pizza sales help fill the COVID-19 cheese sales gap

The dairy checkoff says there is an important sales category that has benefited from the COVID-19 pandemic.  Tom Gallagher with Dairy Management Inc says the spike in pizza deliveries and contact-free pizza sales has moved a lot of cheese, but, “As far as offsetting the losses of the rest of the foodservice, it’s done a lot, but as you see from the cheese numbers and the sales, we’re down for the year about 2.4% in total cheese.”.

Domino’s Pizza is reportedly hiring nearly 30-thousand additional employees because of the pizza delivery demand.  Gallagher says they’re not alone. “The other big chains, you know, Pizza Hut, Papa John’s, that we’ve worked with, they’re seeing that same kind of need. They’ve had enormous sales increases.”

Gallagher says many local restaurants have followed suit of their pizza partners, and dairy sales through Taco Bell and the U.S. Dairy Export Council have also increased.
