USDA: July milk production at 17.8 billion pounds

The USDA says milk production in the top 24 states during July 2020 was 17.8 billion pounds, slightly higher than the revised June total of 17.5 billion pounds and up 1.5% from July 2019. California was the biggest producer, followed by Wisconsin and Idaho.

Average production was 2,016 pounds per cow, 19 more than a year ago, with Michigan leading the way at an average of 2,300 pounds.

The dairy cow herd in the main production states was 8.829 million head, up 2,000 on the month and 44,000 on the year.

Year to date milk production is 129.927 billion pounds, ahead of the 2019 pace, with annual production expected to be 221.8 billion pounds.

The USDA’s next production estimate is out September 11th.

Illinois: Production: 145 million pounds, up 3.6% from July 2019; average of 1,745 pounds per cow, 60 higher than a year ago; herd of 83,000 head, steady with last year

Indiana: Production: 351 million pounds, up 6% from July 2019; average of 1,950 pounds per cow, 70 higher than a year ago; herd of 180,000 head, 4,000 more than last year

Iowa: Production: 442 million pounds, up 2.3% from July 2019; average of 2,035 pounds per cow, 45 higher than a year ago; herd of 217,000 head, steady with last year

Michigan: Production: 984 million pounds, up 2.7% from July 2019; average of 2,300 pounds per cow, 45 higher than a year ago; herd of 428,000 head, 3,000 more than last year

Minnesota: Production: 860 million pounds, up 1.5% from July 2019; average of 1,945 pounds per cow, 50 higher than a year ago; herd of 442,000 head, 5,000 less than last year

Ohio: Production: 475 million pounds, up 4.4% from July 2019; average of 1,870 pounds per cow, 50 higher than a year ago; herd of 254,000 head, 4,000 more than last year

South Dakota: Production: 262 million pounds, up 11.5% from July 2019; average of 1,930 pounds per cow, 20 higher than a year ago; herd of 136,000 head, 13,000 more than last year

Wisconsin: Production: 2.615 billion pounds, up 0.6% from July 2019; average of 2,080 pounds per cow, 30 higher than a year ago; herd of 1.257 million head, 11,000 less than last year
